GPS Tracking, Faster Response Time, and 250+ ALS Units Strengthen Rural & Urban Health Systems
Lucknow: The Yogi Adityanath government has dramatically reshaped emergency healthcare services in Uttar Pradesh, expanding 108 emergency ambulances and 102 maternal–child health ambulances to reach even the most remote parts of the state. As a result of this sweeping upgrade, more than 13.26 crore patients have received rapid medical assistance—an achievement praised even in the World Bank’s 2018–19 report.
The government has deployed 2,249 new ambulances across urban, rural, Bundelkhand and Purvanchal regions, ensuring reliable access to essential health services where facilities were earlier insufficient. Additionally, over 250 Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances equipped with ventilators, defibrillators and modern life-saving equipment are now operational, enabling critical on-the-spot interventions for severely ill patients.
Response Times Reduced by Nearly Four Times
A major boost to the system has come from the integration of GPS tracking, two-way communication devices and GIS mapping. Call centre operators can now instantly locate the nearest available ambulance and optimize routes, reducing delays caused by traffic or poor road conditions.
This has resulted in a dramatic improvement:
- 108 ambulance service response time dropped from 28.12 minutes (2014–15) to 7.25 minutes.
- 102 maternal and infant ambulance service response time improved from 19.10 minutes to 6.58 minutes.
Health experts note that this rapid response has significantly contributed to lowering maternal and infant mortality rates across the state.
Government Focus: ‘Time is Life’
Since assuming office in 2017, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has emphasized standardized, modern and accessible healthcare services for every citizen. His government prioritized expanding ambulance networks in remote regions, especially in Bundelkhand and Purvanchal, where medical access had long been a challenge.

With every ambulance linked to a GPS-enabled command system, specialists can now guide paramedics in real time—especially during critical maternal emergencies—ensuring life-saving care even before reaching the hospital.
Massive Impact Since 2017
The combined performance of 108 and 102 services has strengthened Uttar Pradesh’s health infrastructure remarkably:
- 3.57 crore patients received emergency care through 108 services
- 9.62 crore pregnant women benefited from 102 ambulances, ensuring safe transport and improved maternal care
- 7.14 lakh critical patients received high-level treatment through ALS ambulances, where every second counted
Officials say upcoming innovations like drone ambulances and AI integration will further revolutionize emergency medical response in the state.
A Milestone in India’s Public Health Mission
The Yogi government’s ambitious expansion of ambulance services has not only reduced mortality rates but also strengthened the overall health infrastructure of Uttar Pradesh. The initiative stands as a major milestone in building a robust, accessible and rapid emergency healthcare system—bringing the state closer to national and global standards of medical response and public health safety.
